What are veneers?

Veneers are a small layer of porcelain that can be stuck to the front of your teeth to improve their appearance. In some situations, this can be done without the removal of any of your tooth structure, however, normally this process involves the removal of an equivalent portion of your tooth.

Compared to composite bonding (white filling material), porcelain veneers produce the most natural appearance in replacing lost tooth tissue. Because it is constructed outside of your mouth and then cemented in place, we have far higher control over colour, shape, and position of the material. It is also resistant to chipping, staining, and colour change over time. It is also likely to last longer than white filling material.

It is notoriously difficult to create a veneer to match a natural front tooth. The colour and characterisation needs to be perfect to blend in. Here porcelain veneers were placed on the right central and lateral incisors, which had been previously repaired by another dentist with white filling material. Veneers placed by Dr. Andrew Paterson.

  • What are porcelain veneers?

Veneers are a small layer of porcelain that can be stuck to the front of your teeth to improve their appearance. In some situations, this can be done without removal of any of your tooth structure, however normally this process involves removal of an equivalent portion of your tooth.

  • How do porcelain veneers differ from composite bonding (white filling material)?

Compared to composite bonding (white filling material), porcelain veneers produce the most natural appearance in replacing lost tooth tissue. Because they are constructed outside of your mouth then cemented in place, we have far higher control over colour, shape, and position of the material. It is also resistant to chipping, staining, and colour change over time. It is also likely to last longer than white filing material.

  • Can veneers be made of composite (white filling material)?

Yes they can, but this is really composite bonding (white filling material) rather than veneers. The white filling material is likely to chip, stain, and the colour will change over time. They will last for around 5 years then need to be replaced with porcelain veneers.

  • How long do porcelain veneers last for?

Current research suggests survival of veneers is on average between 8 to 20+ years. However this is affected by individual factors such as how clean they are kept, the quality of materials used, and the way the patients teeth meet together.

  • Do porcelain veneers damage teeth?

The short answer is yes. In almost all cases a portion of your tooth will need to be removed to make space for your veneers. For this reason it is unlikely that veneers will be an appropriate treatment for healthy teeth. However if the enamel on the front of your teeth has deteriorated, it can be appropriate to remove it and replace with porcelain.
